Appearing In UK Searches

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

When using Google, the majority of users use global search.  However, it is estimated that over 10% of UK searchers use the “pages from the UK” button on a regular basis.  In some cases, UK based websites will appear for a search term in a global search but not in a UK specific search.

Whenever a user carries out a UK only search, Google filters the results, primarily by removing .com sites that are also hosted in foreign countries.  This technique was a bit hit or miss because many UK sites are hosted by American companies, and they would be excluded from UK specific searches.  For some time now, users have been able to overcome this problem by specifying geographic targeting within Google’s webmaster tools.  However, the problem still persists for many sites, whose owners are unaware that the issue even exists.

If you think that your site may be affected, you can check by simply searching for a phrase you rank for and checking that your site is still present when the “pages from the UK” button is selected.  If you would like to specify geographic targeting for your site, this can be done very easily within the settings tab of Google’s webmaster tools.

More information on Geotargeting can be found on Google’s support pages.
