Adwords URL Policy Change?

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

A recent thread on webmaster world has claimed that there is to be an AdWords policy change to allow only display URLs from a single domain in each ad group. As of yet, there seems to be no official information about this change from Google, which is causing some speculation that the change may not be genuine. However, several webmasters claim to have received emails and even spoken to Google account managers who confirm that the change will go ahead.

The change will still allow users to use specific landing pages within one domain but if two or more websites are used, they will each have to be contained within separate ad groups. For example, ads for “” and “” will no longer be able to run side by side in the same ad group.

Whilst the majority of AdWords users will be unaffected by this change, it will have a significant (and detrimental) effect on many advertisers who carry out split testing on multiple domains to get the most out of their PPC campaigns. For example, it is not uncommon for some businesses to have two or more websites promoting the same products. Since landing pages are a major factor of quality score, an advertiser can maximise his return on investment by running ads with different domains, to discover which domain works best with each ad or search term.

This change will allegedly be reinforced at the end of February, although there seems to be a lot of conjecture and very few facts surrounding this information. Because of this, it would be prudent to wait a few weeks before changing any campaigns to ensure that the information is genuine.
