Number Of Internet Users

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Earlier this month, ComScore reported that the number of Internet users worldwide has passed 1 billion.  This is the first time that this landmark number has been passed and it is largely due to an increase of Asian users.  China is one of the fastest growing economies in the World and Internet accessibility has steadily increased alongside general standard of living.  Its population is currently in excess of 1.25 Billion, which is more than one fifth of the population.

One recent statistic is that within the next few years, the number of Internet users in China will exceed the population of America.  Although these numbers are impressive, they are only an estimate.  In reality it is very difficult to give accurate and detailed statistics.  For example, one individual using a home computer and a work computer could be mistakenly seen as two users.  Similarly, a family using a shared computer may be seen as a single user.

Regardless of how accurate the data is, there is no doubt that the number of Asian Internet users has increased significantly over the past few years.  This is important for international businesses because it means a huge increase in potential audience.  Of course, in able to capitalise on this information it is necessary to have a website that caters for several languages.  Perhaps, then, it would be more helpful to view a list of new users by language rather than by country.  What are your thoughts?
