SEO For Wordpress

As it comes, WordPress is relatively SEO friendly.  It’s link structure makes it easy for the spiders to crawl and the code contains very few (and sometimes no) validation errors.  However, there are a few simple steps that can be taken to make your WordPress blogs even more SEO friendly.

1. Make sure that your page urls contain your blog post’s name rather than just a post number.  This can be done very easily by going to the permalinks page in settings and typing “/index.php/%postname%” into custom structure field.  Alternatively, you can add a rewrite rule in your .htaccess file to have more control over your url syntax.

2. Change your page title order to put your blog post name before your blog name or date.  The first few words in a title are given more weight and will also catch the attention of your readers.  This can be done by editing header.php and swapping the order of the PHP tags to put “wp_title” before “bloginfo”.

3. Make good use of heading tags.  You may find that your blog entry title is automatically put in a <h2> tag whereas your blog’s name is in a <h1> tag.  If this is the case, you can edit these in single.php and header.php respectively in most blog templates.  Choose a format that suits you, but you may find that the best solution is to put your blog entry title in a <h1> and swap your blog name for an image.  Also remember to make good use of other heading tags and use a good heading structure wherever it is suitable.

4. Avoid any duplicate content issues by using “index, nofollow” tags on category pages, tags pages and archive pages.  This will allow search engine spiders to follow links on these pages but ensures that they are not listed in the index.  There are several plugins that can make this a simple process and “robotsmeta” is one of the best.

5. Pay attention to your blog’s link structure.  Make sure that your blog entries can be accessed with as few clicks as possible and remove unnecessary links on your blog pages to other sites and unnecessary pages within your blog.  You may want to use a pagination plugin to help you with this.

There are other techniques you can use to maximise you SEO for WordPress but these five steps listed above can have a significant effect on your blog’s listings and will only take a matter of minutes to do.
