PageRank Accuracy

Every website owner would like their site to have as high a PageRank as possible and many people believe it is a crucial part of search engine success.  In truth, it is nothing more than a reflection of the accumulated value of a site’s back links and it is this value that makes the difference in the listings.

PageRank is gained whenever a page is linked to and the amount gained is a “share” of the source’s value.  The size of this share is determined by the number of links that are on the source page.  If your site has a link from a site that is considered to be from a bad neighbourhood (such as an adult site), it is likely that you will receive no benefit from this link, although you will still receive some PR value from it.  This can lead to a discrepancy between the visible PR value of your site and the true value that your site receives from its back links.

There are also many other factors that determine the quality of a link.  Among others, page relevancy and anchor text have a significant effect on the quality of a link, but neither of these will have any effect on PageRank.  In general, a higher PR indicates a stronger linking position, but PageRank should always be taken with a pinch of salt as it is only an estimation and a rough one at best.
