How Many Backlinks?

Backlinks are crucial to the success of a site’s search engine listings. Links to a site have always been considered as similar to votes to the site, and a lot of links will indicate to the search engines that a site is popular. However, not all links are equal. A link from a well established and “popular site” will generally give a much greater benefit than a link from a new site with little credibility.

Pagerank gives a rough indication of a site’s “popularity” or “importance” as perceived by Google. Therefore, links from high PR sites are likely to have a greater impact than links from lower PR sites. However, there are a lot of factors that determine the quality of a link and PR is just one of them. Other factors include anchor text, page relevancy and the number of links on a page.

One good backlink could have a greater value than 100 poor quality links. For this reason, looking at the number of backlinks a page has will not give an accurate measure of link score. Similarly, a site’s PageRank should only be taken as a rough guide as it does not consider anchor text and page relevancy. It is always good to see the number of backlinks and PageRank of a site increase. However, the real acid test is the effect that this has on listings.
