Google PageRank Funnelling

Your site’s link structure can have a huge effect on your page’s listing, particularly with sub-pages. In simple terms, a higher PageRank leads to better listings in the search engines.

Pagerank is passed from page to page by links and the amount of PageRank that is passed is divided by the number of links on a page. For example a page with a PR 4 and 5 links on page may pass a value of 4 to the other pages.  If it had 20 links on the page, it may only pass a PR value of 3 to the other pages.

Using “nofollow” tags on some links can effectively help you channel or funnel your site’s PageRank to where it is needed most.  For example, you may decide to put “nofollow” attributes on your links from your index page to your “contact us”, “about us”, “privacy policy” and so on.  This way, the other pages linked from your index page get a larger share of the PageRank that is passed, which may help their listings.

While writing this blog entry, I have used a very simplified view of Google PageRank to help explain it simply and easily.  The more SEO savvy readers out there may argue semantics with me stating “PR isn’t technically passed because nothing is lost from the source page”  or “PR doesn’t help listings, links do.  PR just reflects total link value”.  These points are valid but were left out for simplicity.
