Google Favicon

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Yesterday, Google introduced its new favicon (the icon shown next to the URL and used in bookmarks).  This is a replacement for the existing favicon that has been in use since June, which was a blue lower case g.

The favicon was inspired from an entry of a competition where people could submit their ideas for a new icon.  Apparently, it was chosen for its boldness and use of all the Google colours.  This is a stark contrast to the previous favicon, which is much more subtle.

Personally, I am not a fan.  It looks too garish and the mixture of the colours makes it look like a primary school drawing. It is likely that it won’t be around too long, though, as Google like to update these on a fairly regular basis.  What are your thoughts?
