Will Yahoo Survive

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Over the past year, the future of Yahoo has been very uncertain and has been of great interest to the Internet Marketing community. After rejecting two offers from Microsoft and a failed attempt at forming a PPC partnership with Google, it is left with no potential buyers and little choice but to try and turn itself around. Of course, it is still possible that it will be sold sometime next year, but it is becoming less and less likely.

As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, and this sums up Yahoo’s situation quite nicely. Yahoo has recently made a number of significant changes to its business, which may help see it through the next year. The most significant of these changes is their search for a new CEO. Much of Yahoo’s management have been criticised recently for their poor handling of negotiations with Microsoft and other potential buyers. Choosing the right CEO may work wonders for turning the business around and giving Yahoo a new lease for life.

Further changes at Yahoo include the introduction of an analytics package to rival Google’s; a new digital advertising platform and a new look for Yahoo news. While these changes show that Yahoo is still focusing on the future, many people would argue that it would sell at the drop of a hat if there were any offers on the table. It is, therefore, only trying to reinvent itself out of necessity. However, by this time next year, the the economic crisis may be over and things may start looking rosy once again. If Yahoo can survive this economic winter, then it may just blossom in the spring.
