Facebook Popularity Soars

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

Over the past year, Facebook has gained a huge amount of popularity and is now considered to be the second most popular site in the UK.  I say “considered” to be because the way in which popularity is calculated can vary considerably.

The Alexa ranking, for example, estimates the number of hits each website receives and has Facebook at number two, behind google.co.uk.  Neilson Online, however, rates popularity by the accumulated time users spend on each site and also has Facebook at number two with 2.4 billion minutes per month.  Using this technique, however, they are just behind Windows Messenger and significantly ahead of third place E-bay.

Facebook has acquired a huge percentage of internet traffic in an astonishingly short space of time. Personally, I believe that had Google not bought Facebook when they did, they could have become the search giant’s main rivals very quickly.  With Yahoo in recent financial trouble, a merger between them and Facebook and the addition of an Internet search function on Facebook could have had a significant effect on Google’s market share.
